Secure doors and gates in place with a heavy duty cane latch.
This cane latch (or drop bolt) is a solid, powder coated metal rod that can be dropped into a hole in the floor. This is particularly useful for double doors or gates to hold one side whether latched at top or not. If you have a horse that tends to paw at their doors, a cane latch can be very helpful in bracing the door for that impact.
The cane latch is attached to the door or gate via a simple bolted solid plate. You can drill a hole in concrete, wood frame, or ground. A receiver is not necessary.
